CALIMERA Balkan Workshop 2004

Zadar City Library, 11-12 June 2004

The strategical objective of CALIMERA is “ to ensure that local cultural institutions right across Europe are well-placed to benefit from and contribute to the goals of the new RTD framework programme 2002-2006 in enabling ‘anywhere, anytime, natural access to IST services for all’ through provision of advanced and intelligent systems which improve access to Europe‘s knowledge and educational resources and generate new forms of cultural and learning experience, helping establish a stable pan-European infrastructure for distributed repositories of digital content and community memory within 5 to 10 years.”

One of important activities in the Workpackage 4 is to organise in conjunction with country co-ordination groups, national representatives and industry participants in the ‘Balkan’ countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro) two regional workshops to:

demonstrate and raise awareness of core technologies for local services;
identify and develop the basis on which they can be acquired and implemented;
understand the nature of local conditions and barriers to be overcome;
facilitate active participation in FP6, especially the Community Memory call.

Country coordinators in Croatia and Serbia and Montenegro agreed to take over the organisation and now we are pleased to announce the first workshop.

The program will be focused on:

- cooperation and partnership between cultural institutions to built new services by using IST.
- some best practice examples which will give some ideas of what can be done.
- the short look at possible involvement in EU programs focused on South East Europe.
- the discussion on what can be done in a view of present conditions.

The workshop will take place in Zadar City Library on 11 and 12 June 2004 and is organised by Osijek Public Library, Zadar City Library, Croatia and National and University Library, Slovenia

The draft programme is attached.
