Slavic Collections and Future Challenges

The Sarajevo-based “UNIVERSITY PRESS” doo. publishing house, was founded in 1998 on the initiative of a number of American university libraries with the aim of procuring a steady supply for these libraries of monographic and periodical publications from Bosnia and Herzegovina. By 2005, more than 60 prominent libraries had been supplied with books and periodicals from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. In 2005 these libraries subscribed to 120 periodicals from Bosnia and Herzegovina, mainly those dealing with general social and cultural issues. This distribution of books and periodicals from Bosnia and Herzegovina and from the region was the basis for solid cooperation with the greater number of publishers and booksellers, major libraries in BiH and the region, and the Librarians' Society of BiH. Given the extent of cooperation achieved with foreign libraries and their interest in furthering cooperation with publishers, booksellers and librraries, we are continuing to work with these institutions on the project of the international convention of Slavicist librarians in Sarajevo.

2.  Aims
The project of the international convention of Slavicist librarians in Sarajevo is designed to be an on-going international convention of Slavicist librarians in Sarajevo, to be held annually in Sarajevo to coincide with the Sarajevo Book Fair.
The primary aim is to enable representatives of foreign libraries, and in particular of their slavistic departments, to familiarize themselves in greater detail with current publishing activities in Yugoslav languages on the latter's home ground
Increase the number of libraries procuring books and periodicals in Yugoslav languages
Facilitate direct contacts between representatives of libraries from the USA ande Europe and librarians from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region in order to advance direct cooperation and increase the extent of interlibrary exchange
3. Date of the convention

Sarajevo, 20-23 April 2005, to coincide with the Sarajevo Book Fair. The convention will be held in the Collegium Artisticum city gallery in Sarajevo, which is immediately adjacent to the Skenderija Cultural and Sports Centre halls where the Sarajevo Book Fair is held.
